More Whitworth College Babes in Bonnets

From the Whitworth Collection at LLF Library, circa late 1800s, early 1900s.

While I am far from an expert on the Whitworth College campus buildings, it is unclear what building this may be in the background.  According to historical information I have read, many of the original buildings designed by young Baltimore architect A.E. Moreton prior to the Civil War were of white clapboard.  They were, in time, replaced by the brick buildings that now dot the campus.

If anyone has an idea as to the identity of the young women in the picture, or the building behind them, please leave a comment here or on my Facebook page.

  1. The only remaining Whitworth clapboard building is the President's Home/Elizabeth Cottage which has recently had its exterior redone. The building in this photo bears some similarity to Elizabeth Cottage: the windows and other design features. Perhaps all of the original buildings resembled this one.
As for the bonnets (some with flowers?) and the flower bouquet maybe these ladies were wedding attendants! Another guess would be that this is a group ready for the traditional dance around the Maypole held on Whitworth's campus.

  2. Good points, Bettie. I know they did Maypole dances at Whitworth, as there are other, "newer" photos depicting such.
